Can You Use CBD Oil For Fibromyalgia?

    |
    5 min

In recent years, many patients with chronic health conditions and disorders such as Arthritis and Epilepsy have begun to experiment with CBD to help relieve their symptoms. But can you use CBD oil for fibromyalgia?

    What Is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a collection of symptoms of which the most commonly reported is widespread pain. Often this is pain that does not relate to a particular incident or trauma and usually has more than one area of pain in the person’s body.

I have seen patients who exhibit unsettling pain and it has been brought about by an injury and then a gradual, unexplainable progression of symptoms to the point where it is having a hugely detrimental effect on their life.

One in particular that stands out was a patient who had exploratory surgery on their spine which sparked a bizarre set of pain reactions.

Over a period of years their pain and other symptoms got worse and were, quite frankly, baffling to the medical system. This is one of the problems with fibromyalgia, it can be so unusual and complex with so many seemingly disconnected symptoms.

In my view the symptoms are not disconnected, how can they be? They are occurring in one person’s body and that person is a united entity. The problem is that we are taught anatomy and physiology in bits and at the end of our studies we forget to put the body back together again so view it as a series of unrelated parts.

This is why we have a foot specialist who may never relate your foot problem to your knee, hip or lower back for example.

Other symptoms of fibromyalgia can also be apparent such as:

    • Low energy and extreme fatigue
    • Muscular stiffness
    • Disrupted sleep patterns
    • "Fibro-fog" problems with memory and concentration lacking
    • Headaches
    • Digestive problems such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) a digestive condition that causes stomach pain, constipation and/or diarrhoea and bloating

Unfortunately in my opinion fibromyalgia has become a dumping ground diagnosis where, because the symptoms appear to have no set pattern, people are given a label and far too often dismissed to a lifetime of pain clinics, drugs designed for epilepsy and seizures, stronger and stronger opiate based medication, non steroidal anti-inflammatories and/or antidepressants with some cognitive behavioural therapy thrown in for good measure.

Rather than dealing with this problem with such potent medication I would argue one must put in place the basic ingredients to good health. These are good, wholesome nutrition, no processed foods, exercise everyday, meditation and/or yoga every day, regular pilates, a healthy environment, a gentle but regular fasting regime and fresh air.

If you put in place good health behaviour then slowly but surely your body will move towards good health. It cannot make this change overnight but will gradually occur so please be patient with your body.

    What Is CBD Oil?

CBD oil is an extract of the cannabis sativa plant. At CBD One the cannabis sativa contained in our range has been grown by specialist farmers who grow the plant specifically to create CBD products.

They have been doing this for generations and can recognise when to harvest the plant to gain the most potent combination of all the compounds in cannabis that give it its remarkable properties.

The key to an effective product is that it should have the Entourage Effect which is the synergy of all the compounds in the cannabis plant. These compounds have three main areas: cannabinoids (like CBD), terpenes (essential oils) and flavonoids.

Too many CBD products on the market today do not have this vital synergy and, therefore, are lacking in their effect. Fortunately, here at CBD One every single one of our products is made to deliver the entourage effect in all its glory!

Is CBD Oil Good For Fibromyalgia?

Is CBD Oil Good For Fibromyalgia?

CBD oil is a healthy food supplement. If I asked you can bad food (for bad food read things like processed foods that may be high in sugar and trans fatty acids and fast foods but there are plenty of other examples) cause disease then I assume your answer would be ‘yes’.

Therefore, at the other end of the spectrum we can also say does good food create health? The answer to this is most definitely yes. Or at the very least it is an important factor in the ingredients that create good health.

I prefer to frame the question can CBD help with…insert a medical problem….in terms of the simple fact that we know cannabinoids are an important part of good nutrition, just like fermented foods or Vitamin D, we use CBD as part of the healthy lifestyle that will bring us good health.

Do not expect taking CBD oil for fibromyalgia to be a magic bullet that is the answer to all your problems, this is no different to expecting one of the pills your doctor gives you to be the answer to all your health problems.

Many people report amazing things happening when they take CBD oil for pain and I suspect there is a simple reason for this:

We have a system of receptors throughout our central and peripheral nervous system and in many other organs and tissues of our body called the endocannabinoid system (ECS) this system works at its optimum when cannabinoids communicate with it. The ECS is vital for the amazing balancing of our well being that our body does automatically called homeostasis. Our body produces our own cannabinoids, the most commonly known one is called anandamide which has an influence on many things including our mood, it makes us feel good.

For a number of reasons we may find our body is not producing enough of our own cannabinoids. I suspect one reason may simply be that because cannabis has been illegal in most of the world for many years there are very few cannabinoids in the food chain anymore. We all used to get trace cannabinoids because it was grown all over the world and I suspect some were picked up in foodstuffs.

My theory, admittedly unproven, is that many of us may have cannabinoid insufficiency so when we take CBD it is merely dropping into a system that has been waiting for cannabinoids so it can feel like our body ‘lights up’! When what is actually happening is that we are giving our body food that it likes.

What Is The Best Type Of CBD For Fibromyalgia?

If you have fatigue alongside your pain I would suggest trying our Absorb range which is water soluble so can be added to a drink. Being water soluble means it can get into your system fast so many people report it has an energising uplifting effect.

Our CBD oils tend to be more calming as they take time to get into your system so they can be used if you’re not sleeping well.

We get quite a few people using the Absorb in a morning drink then they take the oils in the afternoon and evening. Because of this we put together a set of am/pm bundles which come with a built in discount.

How Long Does It Take For CBD Oil To Work For Fibromyalgia?

Would you ask how long does it take for a good diet to make you better? That being said we see people report fast changes and we see others say nothing happened for weeks then they begin to feel improvements.

If you can, use CBD for at least three months before deciding if it is for you. I would say this as much for an exercise regime or a sensible diet as I would for CBD so please be realistic and patient. Changes, especially when it is a complex chronic problem cannot simply happen overnight, we do not have a magic on/off switch to our well being.

    I wish you good health.
