Once more we all blinked and an entire year zipped by! I swear it’s just the start of the year and we have all of 2019 to enjoy. Ah well.
I have battened down the hatches and switched my brain into what I call ‘Cosy mode’. Given the long dark nights I figured a long time ago that I had to change my mental state to enjoy this time of year so I switch to enjoyment of the darkness, the glow of candles and fires and, of course, the twinkling of Christmas lights.
The Christmas festival is a time of feasting and family. Regardless of the insane commercial excess we are now exposed to, the whole point of Christmas was that it was a coming together and sharing of our resources in the leanest time of the year. I’m staying away from the religious connotations for one reason only – we all know that side of the story.
Of course I am sure there are many who will be watching what they eat, calorie counting and feeling guilty for over indulging.
However, for once I am here to tell you to go for it (kind of)! Did you know that there is very good research showing that if you eat food you think is bad for you and feel bad about it, it has a very negative effect on you.
Fortunately there is a get out clause here which is wonderful to behold! It is very simple too. If you eat something you think is bad for you but do not care and thoroughly enjoy the deliciousness of it, like a mince pie with lashings of thick cream for instance, then guess what? It does not have such a negative effect on you.
That’s right. Enjoyment is a powerful way to help food do you good, meanwhile, fretting and guilt has the opposite effect.
The basic lesson is that being happy is very healthy and very good for you. This sounds obvious but I am sure we all know people who seem weighed down with all of life’s worries – and it does them no good.
There are no such ‘cheats’ for over eating I’m afraid. If you eat too much on a particular day then you need to think about what you will be eating the next day. This cannot be avoided if you wish to maintain a healthy weight.
Firstly if you must eat something with pastries or cakes such as mince pies, then make sure you counter balance the large carbohydrate count by adding a good helping of fat, such as extra thick double cream. The fats help balance the carbs and will stop you feeling too sleepy from the blood sugar crash of eating mince pies. And before you worry, good fats do not cause heart disease.
Secondly, beer most definitely puts weight on you. It is known as liquid bread for a reason and one pint is the equivalent of 4 slices of bread. However, wine and spirits do not put weight on you despite being highly calorific. The calories in wine and spirits are not bioavailable so your body cannot store them in the form of fat.
Please be careful with alcohol. It can truly be the demon drink and must be treated with respect and taken in moderation.
I wish you all the very merriest of Christmas times and may you all enjoy this wonderful midwinter festival. Before we know it Spring will be in the air so savour the crisp, frosty mornings when we get them. Have a pause and smell the winter air, it is a beautiful time of year if you look closely.
