    Is CBD Oil Safe?

    Advice
    |
    5 min

CBD Oil has seen a surge in popularity in recent years, with many users claiming it helps them to relieve the symptoms of a number of health conditions, from chronic pain to stress and anxiety.

But as a product that’s still relatively new to the health supplement market, many potential customers have been left wondering: is CBD oil safe?

    What Is CBD Oil?

CBD, or Cannabidiol, is one of more than a hundred cannabinoid compounds found in the cannabis sativa plant.

These compounds interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system, a network of receptors and transmitters that help to manage a range of the body’s functions, from sleep patterns and moods to our appetite and immune system responses.

Historically humans have used cannabinoids for thousands of years, but because of prohibition of cannabis in the last century we have become deficient in them because they have been removed from the food chain.

To counter this, CBD oil is extracted from the cannabis plant in a similar way to essential oils, and used as a dietary supplement to help provide the body with the compounds needed to help the endocannabinoid system function at its best.

Does CBD Oil Get You High?

A common misconception about CBD oil is that because it’s a by-product of the cannabis plant it will get you high, but this isn’t the case.

While CBD is a cannabinoid compound from the cannabis plant, the compound responsible for the psychoactive properties we associate with being “high” is THC, or Tetrahydrocannabinol.

This THC interacts with CB1 receptors in the endocannabinoid system, which interact with the central nervous system to produce the “high” associated with smoking marijuana.

CBD, on the other hand, favours the CB2 receptors that are more prominent in the peripheral nervous system, which is responsible for the relaxing and healing benefits commonly associated with CBD oil.

Is CBD Oil Safe To Use?

As CBD Oil is a plant extract, and provides the body with compounds it already naturally produces, it is considered exceptionally safe.

All of our products are manufactured to an extremely high standard, and we always verify our cannabinoid profile with thorough laboratory checks so you can be confident when using any products in the CBD One range.

There are some suppliers, however, that cannot or do not verify their products, which means you have no idea what you are consuming; so we always urge caution when choosing a CBD supplement.

If you’re taking CBD oil for the first time and have never used any CBD products before, we would recommend starting with a smaller dose and working your way up over time.

You should also consult your doctor or healthcare professional before using CBD oil, or any CBD products, to ensure it won’t have any effect on any medication you are currently taking.

Does CBD Oil Have Any Side Effects?

Does CBD Oil Have Any Side Effects?

Side effects with CBD oil are extremely rare, but will tend to be very mild if they are ever experienced.

Users can feel fatigued or suffer from loose bowels if too much CBD oil is taken too quickly, as the body struggles to adapt to the increase in cannabinoids flooding the system, but this can be easily solved by lowering the dose being taken and giving the body time to adjust to the supplementation.

One research review into CBD oil revealed that CBD oil does not have a negative impact on any core functions, and revealed no negative side effects on:

    • Physiological parameters, including blood pressure, heart rate and body temperature
    • Food digestion
    • Glucose levels
    • pH levels
    • Oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange between the lungs and bloodstream
    • Red blood cell volume
    • Vomiting
    • Potassium and sodium levels

The same study also found that higher doses of CBD oil (up to 1,500mg per day) were well tolerated in humans, which is well above the daily recommended dose of our products, making it a safe option for anyone looking to reduce their symptoms.

By comparison the side effects for ibuprofen, something easily available over the counter at any pharmacy or supermarket and which many people will reach for when looking for relief from a range of symptoms, are:

    • Headaches
    • Feeling dizzy
    • Feeling sick (nausea)
    • Being sick (vomiting)
    • Wind
    • Indigestion

Couple this with the fact that Ibuprofen and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been linked to an increased risk of suffering from a heart attack or stroke and you can see why we’re advocates for the natural option!

    The Bottom Line

The bottom line if you’re wondering whether or not CBD oil is safe is yes - it is.

While there are currently no approved health claims for CBD or any cannabinoids, our products are sold as supplements to support health and wellbeing alongside a balanced diet and lifestyle, so generally we can say that you are okay to try our CBD supplements as they are incredibly safe to use.

With a much lower chance of side effects than common over-the-counter medication, we look at it this way - there are no real reasons not to give CBD oil a try.
