How To Take CBD Oil: A Simple Guide

    Advice
    |
    5 min

With its increase in popularity over the last couple of years, it’s likely that you’ve already heard of CBD oil.

But with so many new products coming onto the market each month, it’s impossible to know which are actually effective.

To help, here’s our simple guide of how to take CBD oil.

    What Is CBD Oil?

CBD (cannabidiol) oil is a cannabinoid compound found in the cannabis plant.

It has been found to have a wide range of exciting properties and when extracted correctly from the cannabis plant it can be taken as a food supplement with no risk of getting high or stoned.

There are many other cannabinoids in the cannabis plant such as the exciting new kid on the block, CBG, through to tetrahydrocannabinol, which is more commonly known as THC. This is the cannabinoid compound that can get you high and is currently illegal in the UK.

Whilst THC is useful for quite a number of medical issues the fact it can intoxicate people means it cannot be used by everyone, even if it was legal.

This is because some people do not like the feeling of getting high or it can even make people feel nauseous, paranoid or anxious. For others of course there is the simple fact their job means they cannot have THC in their system, such as HGV drivers or police officers.

CBD itself has become very popular in the last three or four years with enormous growth in sales of CBD products of all kinds. People are using it for a wide range of problems and many are reporting great success.

What is amazing about CBD is that whilst it can be used for many problems it is also amazingly safe and so it is a low-risk option for people to get potential benefits where modern medicine and pharmaceutical products have either caused terrible side-effects or just not helped someone.

Because of this lots of people are trying CBD.

It is available in all manner of products from oils, which is what most people know about, to water soluble products such as the CBD One Absorb range.

There are also edible products like gummies and just about any other type such as CBD bath bombs, creams, foods and drinks galore.

You name it, people are trying to find a way of selling CBD in it!

But how do we work out what way we should be taking CBD and what it may, or may not, do for us?

Let's start with its influence on our body.

CBD talks to receptors in the human body called cannabinoid receptors, there are CB1 and CB2 receptors in your central nervous system and peripheral nervous system.

They are also widespread in many of your organs, connective tissues, joints and even in your skin. This is why CBD and other cannabinoids seem to have a wide range of effects on our body.

There are receptors for CBD in a large area of our body and these receptors are part of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) which is a system of the body that we only discovered in the last three or four decades.

We are only just understanding how remarkable it is, how powerful it is and yet how it helps create harmony with all our health giving systems.

The ECS influences our body and homoeostasis, which is the body's ability to maintain its well-being regardless of what we are doing or our environment.

It is vital for life to continue in an effective way and it would appear that cannabinoids have a powerful role in helping our system function well.

    How To Take CBD Oil

To know the most effective ways to take CBD, we have to look at what we call bioavailability which is your body's ability to take the extract and use it to be effective in your body.

We know that traditional CBD oils have a bioavailability of between 10 and 15 percent. Whilst this may not seem very good, because all that means around 85% of your CBD is metabolised and doesn't work in your system, it is a testament to the power of CBD that only 10 to 15% works on your system and we still see amazing changes in people. In fact, we can see life changing improvements in people.

The best way to take CBD all depends on your personal preference.

But there are some things to avoid unless you have no other choice such as gummies, where you only absorb 3% of the CBD. That means it has 3% bioavailability and this is a very expensive way to take CBD so I would never really advise CBD capsules unless there are very particular circumstances.

Taking a standard CBD oil extract with food either before or after eating can slightly increase the bioavailability of it.

With the oils, you have to put them under your tongue and keep them there for 2 to 3 minutes then swallow. This is generally a slow release way of getting CBD into your system.

Some people do not like the taste of the oil, however, if you buy high-quality CBD this is less of an issue because it is a natural plant extracts and often can have quite an interesting and complex flavour.

I have tasted and tested a lot of different CBD and found many of them to have a horrible rancid taste or almost taste of nothing, if that is the case with your CBD the chances are it is a very poor quality product.

Another way you can tell if a product is poor quality is the colour of it. If the CBD is clear, transparent or a very delicate light yellow it is probably low grade and should be avoided. CBD should be a deep golden or brown colour.

Another way to take CBD is with a water soluble product.

There are a lot of very poor water soluble products on the market, but here at CBD One our Absorb range is the highest quality you will find anywhere on planet Earth.

The is 100% bioavailable which means every drop of CBD you take gets into your system fast and gets to work fast. We have noticed through experience that this means our water soluble products tend to be more energising in the short term whilst the oils tend to be slightly more calming.

Over time of course all CBD does the same job in your body but we noticed there are slightly different, subtle effects between our oils and our water soluble products.

How Much CBD Oil Should I Use?

There are no hard and fast rules for how much CBD oil to take, but generally I advise people to start with middle strength products.

I would consider a middle strength product to be somewhere between 500 mg and 1000 mg, so if you start from there you have two directions to go in - you may take more CBD if needed, or you may take less.

If people start on a low dose and nothing is changing the temptation is to think that CBD is not going to work when actually it may simply have been that you needed to take a little more to get you going, so start in the middle and then lower or increase accordingly.

We all have our own sensitivity and our own reactions so whilst there is a science behind CBD, how we make it, how we understand and what it does to our body, there is also an art form to how to take it.

This is similar to very many natural treatments so I always advise people to listen to their body as they try CBD. See how it is changing or altering then increase or lower the dose according to how you're feeling.

Is It Possible To Take Too Much CBD Oil?

It is quite possible to have too much of a good thing, as with all things in life, but the great thing with CBD is that it is non-toxic so if you take too much CBD oil there are very few side-effects.

The main ones that may occur are diarrhoea, a mild headache, or feeling tired; but the remedy to any of the side-effects is quite simple: just take less CBD.

Do not worry about overdosing on CBD as it is extremely safe and I know of no one who has been caused serious harm by taking too much CBD. I certainly know people who have been harmed seriously by taking pharmaceutical drugs.

    How Is CBD Best Absorbed?

When we look at CBD, we talk about it in terms of its bioavailability. This is the ability of you to take a product and absorb it into your system so it does a job.

Here at CBD One we know that our oils have a 10 to 15% bio availability, it is a testament to the quality of our CBD oil that even though the bioavailability is low it still has wonderful effects on people, so do not be put off by this low bioavailability.

We also have our Absorb range, which is water soluble CBD, and this is remarkable because it has 100% bioavailability. This means that when you take a shot of any of our absorb products all of the CBD in the product gets to work in your system quickly.

With CBD, taking small amounts of it will lift and energise whilst taking larger amounts seems to have a more sedating effect so when you take our stronger strong oils they tend to be more calming but when you take our lighter absorb range it gets in your system fast so tends to be more energising.

We then have our Hatcha powder which is designed to be sprinkled on food, added to drinks or you can even bake with it!

Just make sure when you're adding it to baking you do not cook at a higher temperature than 160° centigrade. Hatcha has low bioavailability but it is excellent value and this means that whilst a lot of it is not absorbed when you take it, you can take a lot of it in one go because it is not expensive. 100 servings of our Hatcha powder is only £24.99 so it is a cost-effective method of taking CBD.

It is also a whole milled plant, so truly this is like taking a bite out of nature at its best. In that respect it is very close to a natural, unprocessed product.

If you’re looking for a different way to take CBD then we have our Release CBD patches. These stick to your skin and over the course of 24 to 36 hours they release CBD into your system.

This is called the transdermal method and it is very efficient with 100% of the CBD absorbed. It must be noted with our patches that they are pure CBD, which means they are not a full spectrum product so they do not have all the other interesting compounds in the cannabis plant.

However, on the positive side they have zero THC, which means people who are dope tested such as professional athletes or drivers can safely try these with no risk whatsoever of failing doping tests.

That being said, we have never heard of anyone failing a doping test taking any of our products in the last four years.

I do not tend to recommend people taking capsules of CBD because they have a bioavailability of about 3%, which means it is very expensive and most of it is flushed away, so until we can find a way to make capsules more bioavailable we will not be doing a capsule product.

    The Bottom Line

As you can see, there are pros and cons to each product.

We have oils with lower bioavailability but are calming but they have more flexibility because if you are taking two or three drops of them you can play around with usage. The oils give you enormous flexibility in your dosage

Our water-soluble absorb range tends to be one shot a day so they are not as flexible as the oils, however their bioavailability is very good and they get to work fast.

Hatcha can be very versatile because you take half a teaspoon as a dose as often as you wish and of course it can be sprinkled on foods added to drinks put in smoothies very easily.

Then we have the easiest to use which is our patches, simply apply one to your skin and forget about it for 36 hours.
