Hemp Oil vs CBD Oil: Is There A Difference?

    Advice
    |
    5 min

If you’ve been considering trying CBD Oil you may have seen sites using the terms Hemp Oil and CBD Oil interchangeably as terms to describe the same product.

However, the reality is that they’re actually very different products that are used for very different things.

So what are the differences between Hemp Oil and CBD Oil?

    Let’s take a closer look.

    What Is Hemp Oil?

The term Hemp Oil refers to any oil extracted from the Cannabis Sativa plant, also known as the Hemp plant.

In reality, this could also be labelled as a “Cannabis Extract” but we’ve found that this term can put a lot of people off, as the word “Cannabis” still has certain connotations surrounding it.

As a matter of fact, all of our CBD Oils are labelled as hemp oil on the packaging as we found that using the term “Cannabis Extract” raised too many eyebrows (despite it meaning the same thing!).

Hemp oil is high in omega 3 and omega 6 essential fatty acids, which are considered "good fats", as well as a host of amino acids, which help your body to make protein.

    What Is CBD Oil?

CBD Oil is extracted from the stalks, flowers and leaves of the hemp plant, and is combined with a carrier oil to form a food supplement.

A full-spectrum CBD Oil contains hundreds of cannabinoid compounds from the cannabis plant including, obviously, CBD, but also THC in very small trace amounts.

CBD Oil has grown in popularity in recent years as a supplement to help regulate the endocannabinoid system, a newly discovered network of receptors in the human body that help to regulate everything from mood, sleep patterns and appetite to pain, immune response and hormones.

Despite coming from the Cannabis Sativa plant, and often being associated with recreational marijuana, CBD oil is non-psychoactive and does not get you high.

    What About Hemp Seed Oil?

Hemp Seed Oil is manufactured by cold pressing hemp seeds and is commonly used in cooking as an alternative to olive oil, and as a carrier oil for CBD Oils.

The similarities between these terms can be incredibly confusing, and we’ve seen far too many products online being sold as “Hemp Oil” when they are, in fact, nothing more than Hemp Seed Oil.

There is an alarming number of “CBD Businesses” that sell Hemp Seed Oil to customers who think it’s the same thing as CBD Oil.

Sadly, while it's incredibly nutritious, these customers are simply flushing their money down the drain by paying for a product that completely lacks any active ingredients.

It’s easy to find these products on platforms like Amazon and, incredibly, people are leaving 5-star reviews calling these products “CBD Oil” when the product descriptions explicitly state that the product is 100% Hemp Seed Oil!

Despite what these companies would want their unsuspecting users to think, Hemp Seed Oil contains little to no CBD (Cannabidiol), and absolutely no THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol).

What Is The Difference Between Hemp Oil And CBD Oil?

This question can be tricky to answer, given the frequent misuse of the names, but generally speaking Hemp Oil and CBD Oil are the same thing in that they are both oils extracted from the Hemp plant.

CBD Oil is extracted specifically for its CBD content, in order to make a range of CBD products, as the quantity of cannabinoid compounds increases as the plant grows, but you could have Hemp Oil which is very low in CBD depending on the specific strain being harvested.

What Is CBD Oil Good For?

CBD Oil is used as a food supplement to support the body’s endocannabinoid system, which appears to play a part in balancing our health through homeostasis, which makes sure our body can function despite the external demands we place on it.

Cannabinoids also appear to interact with our immune systems, but the research into CBD’s true impact on the body is still ongoing so there are no approved health claims for CBD or any cannabinoids

What we can say, however, is that it’s a naturally occurring compound, and is considered exceptionally safe.

What Is Hemp Seed Oil Good For?

As it’s a fantastic source of nutrients, Hemp Seed Oil is most commonly used in cooking, but it can also be used as a carrier oil in CBD products.

Its health benefits include being low in saturated fats, with 40% less saturated fat than olive oil, and its full of omega-3 fatty acids which can help to reduce the risk of heart disease, fight inflammation, and improve brain health.

While it might not be to everyone’s taste, Hemp Seed Oil can be added to smoothies, used for baking, or as a delicious salad dressing.

It’s also commonly added to beauty products for topical use as it’s a non-comedogenic oil, which means it doesn’t clog pores, as well as having fantastic moisturizing properties, and helping to reduce inflammation.

Hemp Oil vs CBD Oil: What’s The Bottom Line?

When it comes to CBD oil and hemp oil, and which is better, it depends on what you’re trying to achieve.

If you’re simply looking for a healthy alternative to olive oil or a way to boost your omega 3 intake, then Hemp Seed Oil is a fantastic choice.

However, if you’re looking for CBD Oil then don’t be fooled into overpaying for Hemp Seed Oil that has been intentionally mislabelled as Hemp Oil, thinking it offers the same benefits as CBD.

There are too many shady businesses relying on customers being confused by the options available on the market.

The key thing to look for when you’re buying is that the product lists the milligrams (mg) of active CBD in it.

If the product doesn’t explicitly state the number of milligrams of CBD it contains, then it’s unlikely to be the real deal, and if you look at the ingredients you’ll probably find that it’s nothing more than Hemp Seed Oil.

You can buy a 500ml bottle of Hemp Seed Oil for around £6 in your local supermarket, so don’t pay £20 for a 50ml bottle of the same product!

    FAQs

Does Hemp Have the Same Effect as CBD?

The short answer is no. CBD and Hemp are two different things. Both come from the Cannabis Sativa plant, but that's where the similarities end.

Hemp is used for a variety of purposes such as making rope, clothes, and paper, while CBD is a compound that's extracted from the plant to be used in oils, edibles, topicals, and other products.

CBD has been shown to offer a variety of health benefits while Hemp is more commonly used for industrial purposes.

Is It Legal to Buy CBD Oil in the UK?

Yes, it is legal to buy CBD oil in the UK as long as it contains no more than 0.2% THC and is sold as a food supplement.

Products that contain higher levels of THC are only legal for medical use and require a prescription from a GP.

Which Is Better, Hemp Oil or CBD Oil?

The truth is, there isn’t a definitive answer to this question. Hemp oil and CBD oil offer different benefits and use. Hemp oil typically is used for culinary purposes, while CBD oil is known for its potential therapeutic benefits.

    Is CBD Stronger Than Hemp?

CBD is not stronger than hemp. Both hemp and CBD come from the cannabis plant, but hemp contains very little THC (the compound that gets you high), while CBD can contain up to 0.3% THC.

CBD is sometimes used for its potential therapeutic benefits, while hemp is more often used for industrial purposes or as a culinary ingredient.

Is Hemp or CBD Better for Pain?

CBD is known for its potential pain-relieving properties, while hemp is not. The hemp seed oil contains very little CBD, THC (the substance that gets you high), and other cannabinoids. This means users are not likely to experience the potential pain-relieving benefits of CBD, but they may enjoy the other benefits of the nutrients found in hemp seed oil.

What Are the Side Effects of Taking CBD?

The side effects of taking CBD are typically mild and may include drowsiness, dry mouth, and an upset stomach. More serious side effects are rare but may include liver damage, interaction with other medications, and increased anxiety.

Always speak with a medical professional before taking CBD, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a medical condition.

Does Hemp Oil Make You Sleepy?

Hemp oil does not typically make people sleepy. In fact, hemp oil is known for its potential energizing properties. Hemp oil contains omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are known for their potential anti-inflammatory and energizing effects.

    Is Hemp an Anti-inflammatory?

Yes, hemp is an anti-inflammatory. The hemp seed oil has been shown to contain anti-inflammatory properties. This is likely due to the omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids found in hemp oil. You can apply hemp oil topically to experience its potential anti-inflammatory benefits.

Does Hemp Oil Help With Anxiety?

Yes, preliminary evidence suggests that hemp oil may help with anxiety. According to a 2015 study, hemp oil was found to potentially reduce anxiety and improve sleep in people with generalized anxiety disorder. Another study from 2019 showed that hemp oil has a calming effect on people with anxiety or sleep disorders.

More research is needed to fully understand the potential benefits of hemp oil for anxiety.

Is Hemp Oil the Same as CBD Oil for Anxiety?

No. Hemp oil is not the same as CBD for anxiety. CBD is typically better known for its potential anxiety-reducing effects. CBD interacts positively with the body’s endocannabinoid system to potentially ease social anxiety and promote relaxation.

Can You Take Both Hemp Oil and CBD Oil?

Yes, you can take both hemp oil and CBD oil. There is no evidence to suggest that taking both hemp oil and CBD oil is harmful. In fact, you can as well combine different CBD products for a more potent effect.
